The purpose of a sketch a day is just to do it - sketch! It doesn't matter if it is an involved sketch or if it is a simple contour or gesture drawing. There are no rules except to sketch each day.

Life parameters can dictate the time investment, but a sketch a day commitment is designed to elevate the personal priority of sketching ... to enforce sketching. Making it into a "resolution" validates the activity (invests it with a bit of a challenge even!) and defends against competing demands. The sketch a day is designed for practice - to reinforce basic skills, and to provide daily contemplation on the issues of two dimensional representation.

Several of us are doing a sketch a day, and I would enjoy hearing from anyone else who decides to join in. We share our efforts, support each other, keep each other honest and... hopefully we'll have some fun doing this!

August 21, 2011

Since I wanted a break from messing with the other painting, and since I needed to let a few spots in the oils get a bit drier (well, at least a bit tackier), I worked on and just about finished the grisaille of the pond. The season has changed everything quite a bit, but the sun was out, there was a slight breeze, and the temperature was perfect - a Grrrrreat day to paint outside!!

  2. Are you using acrylics for this one? I'm so impressed with the amount of detail you're able to discern in nature, yet nothing "grabs" all the attention for itself.

  3. I am - as I confess in the most recent post. The concern over the possibility of not being able to get acrylics transparent enough led to my doing this in a much "harder" sort of way - over emphasizing the dark/light contrasts, for instance... almost like a velveteen painting! As it turns out, the gel makes them Very transparent.
