This sketch of someone picking seeds from a pomegranate was used to think about the hands on a painting I started a while back from a photo. I had wanted to change the hands around some, and that brought me to a halt on the painting... thus the decision to do a study for the third sketch-a-day sketch, although I don't plan on restarting this painting until I finish a different one...
The purpose of a sketch a day is just to do it - sketch! It doesn't matter if it is an involved sketch or if it is a simple contour or gesture drawing. There are no rules except to sketch each day.
Life parameters can dictate the time investment, but a sketch a day commitment is designed to elevate the personal priority of sketching ... to enforce sketching. Making it into a "resolution" validates the activity (invests it with a bit of a challenge even!) and defends against competing demands. The sketch a day is designed for practice - to reinforce basic skills, and to provide daily contemplation on the issues of two dimensional representation.
Several of us are doing a sketch a day, and I would enjoy hearing from anyone else who decides to join in. We share our efforts, support each other, keep each other honest and... hopefully we'll have some fun doing this!

the hand to the left (the right hand of the person in the picture) is beautifully rendered.
ReplyDeleteThank you... I think it's obvious I'm still fighting with the left hand, but then again that's why I had to do a study - to work out fingers in a way I'll enjoy painting. I know many people supposedly try to avoid hands, but I think they are potentially (!) very graceful and I love trying to do them.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I think this person's left hand would go well on ET... maybe that long middle finger glows? I'll just redraw it again before I am anywhere near to painting this...
