The purpose of a sketch a day is just to do it - sketch! It doesn't matter if it is an involved sketch or if it is a simple contour or gesture drawing. There are no rules except to sketch each day.

Life parameters can dictate the time investment, but a sketch a day commitment is designed to elevate the personal priority of sketching ... to enforce sketching. Making it into a "resolution" validates the activity (invests it with a bit of a challenge even!) and defends against competing demands. The sketch a day is designed for practice - to reinforce basic skills, and to provide daily contemplation on the issues of two dimensional representation.

Several of us are doing a sketch a day, and I would enjoy hearing from anyone else who decides to join in. We share our efforts, support each other, keep each other honest and... hopefully we'll have some fun doing this!

A tube of Crest - about half used up.

  1. Do you have one of those tube wringers for paint? Made by Gill Mechanical Co, in Oregon, available from Daniel Smith? I use mine for toothpaste as well as paints, figure I get about 15% more from a tube - a great savings with cadmium and cobalt colours! The big metal one is able to handle 150 mL tubes, but not the plastic one - and none of the cheap (Chinese) imitations can do anything worth while. I have both: plastic one is 30+ years old and still going (with a new handle).

  2. Ah ha ha! I Knew that at least some people would think 'she's a middle-of-the-tube squeezer'! It's supposedly a great tell, but I do both... depending. I roll, and use the thick blue rubber bands over the end, but the plastic tubes are hard to do much with. PAINTS now, I'm a roll and eek out every last gooey drop person!
