The purpose of a sketch a day is just to do it - sketch! It doesn't matter if it is an involved sketch or if it is a simple contour or gesture drawing. There are no rules except to sketch each day.

Life parameters can dictate the time investment, but a sketch a day commitment is designed to elevate the personal priority of sketching ... to enforce sketching. Making it into a "resolution" validates the activity (invests it with a bit of a challenge even!) and defends against competing demands. The sketch a day is designed for practice - to reinforce basic skills, and to provide daily contemplation on the issues of two dimensional representation.

Several of us are doing a sketch a day, and I would enjoy hearing from anyone else who decides to join in. We share our efforts, support each other, keep each other honest and... hopefully we'll have some fun doing this!

This is a drawing of a single parsnip on a ribbed towel. It's another Farmers' Market purchase.

  2. Well, I guess I took the idea that they also call kohlrabi "cabbage apple" a little literally; I was going to work on it a second day, but when I got it out and looked at it I decided not to... I just wasn't interested anymore... so I dug out the parsnip and while I drew the parsnip I had the kholrabi sitting upright in about an inch of water in a sauce pan, little leaves like a flag poking out the top, boiling away. When it was soft through I ran water over it to cool it. Contemplating "what next?" I thought it actually smelled pretty good (drawing parsnips late at night is hungry work) so I took a bite. Mmmm. Yummy. I put a small dab of Smart Balance on a plate and with a little bit of dipping now and then I ate it like an apple - and it was Good!
