The purpose of a sketch a day is just to do it - sketch! It doesn't matter if it is an involved sketch or if it is a simple contour or gesture drawing. There are no rules except to sketch each day.
Life parameters can dictate the time investment, but a sketch a day commitment is designed to elevate the personal priority of sketching ... to enforce sketching. Making it into a "resolution" validates the activity (invests it with a bit of a challenge even!) and defends against competing demands. The sketch a day is designed for practice - to reinforce basic skills, and to provide daily contemplation on the issues of two dimensional representation.
Several of us are doing a sketch a day, and I would enjoy hearing from anyone else who decides to join in. We share our efforts, support each other, keep each other honest and... hopefully we'll have some fun doing this!

This is a drawing of a funky glass bottle made in China. I'm lucky I drew it this morning because the antics of our young, overly exuberant mountain cur raised the wrath of a yellow jacket and she took it out on my right hand (the dog being, apparently, too fast to catch). Half my hand is double it's normal size, and if it's not waaaaaaaaaay better by tomorrow evening I may just have to do tomorrow's sketch with my toes!

I'm so tired I've already fallen asleep once... sitting up. It's my first night back home, but I'm only going to post one sketch tonight. I'll catch up over the next few days with my posting.
This is an air plant sitting in a flute, and it was on the table in the B&B where we stayed. I sketched it in about two sittings over two of the first few days we were there, but I also did some other sketches and/or starts, so this one counts as one - for the 31st.

This peculiar glass vase is in the bathroom where we're staying, and it holds three paper roses. The marble is from the little keyring thing that attaches to the room key.

This is one of a set of six little glass humming birds I bought around Christmas time. They were intended as Christmas ornaments, but I left them hanging up on fine twisted filaments under my kitchen light for the rest of the year... they seem like Spring to me.

This is a blue glass cruet with glass stopper. The line down the left side and the shadows on the paper behind it are because I'm having to get used to a new software. Perhaps when I learn to do this better I'll replace the image with one scanned more tidily.
I used Prismacolor pencils, and would have liked to have had a smoother paper, but you can zoom and see that I laid down so much pigment it should bloom like a candle (am I mixing my metaphors if I mean "bloom" as in wax?) to crush down the pores. I enjoy using either a light touch or a heavy one with colored pencils... it was fun simply to do one with Color!
